Description Amidst tensions with Venezuela, the U.S. recently conducted amphibious military exercises & has considered re-opening multiple military bases in Puerto Rico. In this talk, Dr. Charles Athanasopoulos takes audiences on a detour to an abandoned hangar of the former Ramey AFB in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico to interrogate the legacy of U.S. colonialism in the Porta De Sol region.

Dr. A asks: how does the landscape and urban art reflect traces of colonial violence, echoes of shifting eras, and traces of Puerto Rican resistance?

This detour ultimately reveals a process of desvíascion (re-purposing) enacted at the ruins of Ramey AFB by local and diasporic Puerto Rican urban artists against encroaching Yanquí colonialism.
