Black Iconoclasm Awarded First Book Prize at the Cultural Studies Association

On May 30th, 2025, Black Iconoclasm: Public Symbols, Racial Progress, and Post/Ferguson America was awarded The Cultural Studies Association’s 2025 First Book Prize. During the CSA Plenary, President Robert F. Carley lauded the project by Dr. Charles Athanasopoulos for its originality, stylistic creativity, and for innovating new pathways through the scholarship of Stuart Hall, among others, to think the transitions/fractures surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement. Carley also remarked that Black Iconoclasm won The First Book Prize among multiple worthy projects in a year when the CSA “more than doubl[ed] the number of submissions that [they’ve] received in the past.”
