Explore hip-hop’s history and future through music and conversation.
The Digging in the crates lecture series will kick off with a conversation between two self-admitted crate diggers, J Rawls and the legendary, Easy Mo Bee. Mo Bee, a veteran Hip Hop producer has worked with Big Daddy Kane, Gza, Notorious B.I.G., Craig Mack, 2Pac and even the late jazz great, Miles Davis. While Rawls is an assistant professor of Hip Hop at The Ohio State University as well as an acclaimed producer who has worked with Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Black Thought, Beastie Boys, Del tha Funky Homosapien, and soul singer, Aloe Blacc.
The conversation will consist of the two discussing the nuances of digging in the crates, the relationship between DJing and producing and the sense of timing needed to master both, and the future of Hip Hop beat making. Using the turntables and SP-1200 drum machine on stage, Mo Bee will break down some of his classic beats as well as share a few stories about his time working with legends like Biggie and 2Pac.
