The Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center (CEC) seeks applications for an Engaged Scholar Fellow for Autumn 2019. The CEC is the community engagement and social responsibility extension of the Department.

The CEC is located at 905 Mount Vernon Avenue on the near eastside of Columbus. It is a historically Black neighborhood that while once rich in culture and industry is now under-resourced and many of its residents struggle with the economic and social realities of poverty. The AAASCEC hopes to bring to the center a wide array of academic engagement, research, and other services from across the University and through partnership with organizations outside of the University.

Ohio State tenure track faculty whose current research is engaged, and particularly research that has a local impact, are encouraged to submit a research statement of approximately 600-800 words that articulates why and how the research is relevant to the near eastside/or greater Columbus Black community. Fellows will be expected to be in-residence at the CEC for a minimum of 10 hours per week for the full semester. Once per week, Fellows must hold “Office Hours,” which are open hours during which community members can drop-in and learn more about the Fellow’s research. Office space will be provided. Faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences will receive a course buyout. Faculty in other colleges would need their Colleges to subsidize any difference in course buyout costs.

Applications are due July 22, 2019 and should be submitted to Candace Gaiters at gaiters.9@osu.edu.

Inquiries can be directed to Simone Drake at drake.194@osu.edu.
