Current Major (Ending 12-31-06):
The major in African American and African Studies consists of forty-five (45) credit hours. All majors must take African American and African Studies 101 and take five (5) credit hours from each of the four (4) core areas: African American and African History, African American and African Literature, African American and African Culture, and African American and African Politics and Society. Majors then have to select another twenty (20) elective credit hours from one or more of the four core areas. Courses in the core areas are listed below:

Revised Major (Beginning 1-1-07):
The major in African American and African Studies consists of 55 credit hours. All majors must take 3 Core Courses: AAAS 201, an introduction to the discipline and two analytic/methodological courses, AAAS 310, and AAAS 545 or 595), preferably in sequence. In addition, majors must complete a minimum of 20 or up to 30 hours in the chosen Area of Concentration (African American, African or Diaspora); and, a minimum of 5 hours each in the areas Outside the concentration. Moreover, the 55 credit hours must satisfy the Distribution Requirement: a) 10 to 15 credit hours at the 200-level; b) 10 to 20 credit hours at the 300-level; c) 5 to 15 hours at the 400-level; and d) 15 credit hours at the 500-level or above. All majors must complete a minimum of 25 credit hours at the 400 and 500 levels. A maximum of 10 hours in individual/independent studies and/or outside of the department can count towards the major.
