Undergraduate Major

The major in African American and African Studies consists of fifty-five (55) credit hours. All majors must take 3 core courses: AAAS201, and introduction to the discipline and two analytic/methodologic courses, AAAS310, and AAAS545 or 595, preferably in sequence. In addition, majors must complete a minimum of 30 hours in the chosen area of concentration (African American, African or Diaspora); and, a minimum of five (5) hours each in the remaining areas. Moreover, the 55 credit hours must satisfy the distribution requirement: a) 10 to 15 credit hours at the 200-level; b) 10-20 credit hours at the 300-level; c) 5 to 15 credit hours at the 400-level; and d) 15 credit hours at the 500-level or above. All majors must complete a minimum of 25 credit hours at the 400 and 500 levels. A maximum of 10 credit hours in individual studies and/or outside of the department can count towards the major.

General Information on the Major Programs.

No 100 level course can fulfill the requirements for the major.

Major programs are required for graduation.

A student may not take a major and a minor in the same subject.

Courses used toward the major may not be used in the minor unless the Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee have given prior approval.

No more than 10 credit hours of the total major may be in individual studies (493/693) or group studies (294/694).

Students need not file their major programs until they file their graduation applications, that is, three (3) quarters before they plan to graduate.

Once a major is on file in the college office, any changes must be discussed with the faculty advisor and/or the college office advisor.

All majors require a total of forty-five (45) credit hours; no more than twenty (20) credit hours of transfer credit may be applied to any major.

No grades below (C-) will be permitted in courses comprising the major; the minimum overall CPHR of the major shall be 2.00.

Only up to 10 credit hours taken with a S/U grade option may be applied towards the major.

When students complete more than one major, each major must contain a total of forty-five (45) unique credit hours.

No student can receive credit for an Audit course.
