Graduate Program Admission
As an interdisciplinary unit, the Department will consider any applicant with a bachelor's degree in any discipline from an accredited college or university and with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a standard 4.0 scale). While an undergraduate major in African American and African Studies is not a requirement, applicants must have completed at least 4 courses in African American and African Studies or courses related to the global Black experience. Interested applicants must submit to the graduate program:

- Official transcripts from all universities attended
- Official copies of GRE scores and for international students, TOEFL scores
- Three academic letters of recommendation (submitted with the Graduate School Reference Form)

*Guidelines for personal statement: The personal statement should clearly define the applicant's reason(s) for seeking admission to the AAAS graduate program, gives the projected focus area of study that constitutes coherent yet broadly defined research interests, career goals, expectations, and provides insight to the level of contribution the student will make to the department.
