The Ray Miller Institute for Change & Leadership

Senator Ray Miller's
Points of Leadership

Real Leaders...

  1. Have an absolute intolerance for injustice and inequality.

  2. Never allow their greatest accomplishment to become their highest achievement in life.

  3. Operate from a "YES I CAN" strategy and find a way to get it done.

  4. Have something to say and are not afraid to say it.

  5. Are fueled by results, excellence and positive change versus rhetoric, mediocrity, and maintaining the status quo.

  6. Have real followers.

  7. Mentor the next generation of real leaders.

  8. Take care of their physical and mental health.

  9. Have a big dream and are unafraid to pursue it.

  10. Know on whose shoulders they stand.

Our goal is to develop leaders who are:

  • Bold

  • Connected

  • Courageous

  • Knowledgeable

  • Principled

  • Progressive

  • Race Conscious

  • Strategic

  • Thinkers

  • Unselfish

  • Visionary

  • Honest

  • Results Oriented

Purpose

Founded on the premise that the Black community continues to be faced with a number of issues that if allowed to persist may reach epidemic proportions, the founders recognized a need for training a new generation of leadership that will tackle these issues with vigor, valor and vision.

The institute aims to cultivate the skills necessary for effective leadership by instilling fellows with a sense of social consciousness and as well as sense of urgency. The institute maintains that in order to engage in effective and substantial leadership, leaders must be aware of the historical role that people of African descent have played in the development of this country and the impediments and hurdles that Black people have had to overcome in order to survive and prosper.

Overview

The Ray Miller Institute for Change & Leadership is a ten-week course that consists of two 90 minute class sessions that are held on Monday evenings. Sessions are primarily held at The Ohio State University Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center located at 905 Mount Vernon Ave. The Fall 2009 Institute begins on October 5 and continues to December 7, 2009.

The Ray Miller Institute for Change & Leadership commenced in the fall of 2006 and is named in honor of Senator Ray Miller.

Training is provided in critical areas such as:

  • Effective Communication
  • Ethics and Values
  • Grassroots Organization
  • Identifying Community Needs & Resources
  • Media Relations
  • Organizational & Business Development
  • Relationship Building
  • Wealth Building and Philanthropy
  • Work/Life Balance
Sessions are facilitated by the Honorable Senator Ray Miller (Ohio, 15th District, Columbus) and Dr. Judson L. Jeffries, Professor of African American and African Studies and Director of the Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center.

In order to find solutions that plague the Black community, it is imperative that leaders be able to think analytically and critically.

The institute uses a three-prong approach to instruction:
  1. Presentations given by leaders from area businesses, civic organizations who are highly regarded in their chosen fields.

  2. Class discussions of assigned readings and current events are conducted in a way that helps fellows apply what they read to real-world situations.

  3. Use of the case method approach to simulate real-life issues concerning leadership.
Leadership fellows participate in discussions focusing on:
  • Leadership and Challenges in the 21st Century

  • Leadership Skills and Strategies

  • Major African American Figures, Milestones and Landmarks
During the ten week course, the leadership fellows work in groups on projects that address pressing issues in the Black community. On the last day of class, groups give presentations and submit a professionally done proposal that explains how they plan to address said issue.
