The Ray Miller Institute for Change & Leadership
“Being the change you wish to see”
Presented by the Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center & the Office of Continuing Education. The Ray Miller Institute for Change & Leadership is a 10-week course designed to cultivate the knowledge and skills necessary for effective leadership by providing training in critical areas such as:- Identifying Community Needs & Resources
- Effective Communication
- Ethics and Values
- Effective Fundraising
- Grassroots Organization
- Media Relations
- Organizational & Business Development
- Relationship Building
- Wealth Building and Philanthropy
The sessions will be facilitated by the Honorable Senator Ray Miller (Ohio 15th District, Columbus) and Dr. Judson L. Jeffries. Dr. Jeffries is a Professor of African American and African Studies and Director of the AAASCEC.
The Institute begins October 5 and continues to December 7, 2009. Classes will be held weekly on Monday evenings from 5:30-8:45 p.m. at The Ohio State University Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center located at 905 Mount Vernon Avenue.
Multi-disciplinary approach
Each session of the Institute will be taught using a multi-disciplinary approach to leadership focusing on the areas of Business, Government and the Non-profit sectors.Curriculum
The Institute curriculum includes:- A self-assessment of strengths/weaknesses and areas of needed improvement
- Leadership and Challenges in the 21st Century
- Leadership Skills and Strategies
- Major African American Figures, Milestones and Landmarks
- A team project that proposes a solution to a pressing community issue.
Eligibility Requirements
- The Institute is open to anyone aged 21 and older who has a desire to become a change agent within his/her local community.
- Participants will receive 3 Continuing Education Units. Attendance, active participation, and a group project are required.
- The Ohio State University Office of Continuing Education is a certified provider of CEUs.

Fees:
The total cost for participation in the Institute for Change & Leadership is $100.
