The theme for the 2009 Summer Enrichment Program is "Following the Freedom Trail: African Americans in Family & Community." The program is designed to provide students with an appreciation for and understanding of African American cultural and historical study as well as an opportunity to develop familiarity and proficiency in the use of computer technology to access information and create knowledge.
Program
The first academic class will be taught from a historical perspective and will be based on the student's reading of selected materials. The second class will be taught from a literary perspective. The third will be devoted to the development of basic computer literacy and is designed to assist students in doing research on the internet and constructing and using web sites. The curriculum will include local and out-of-town field trips to sites such as the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. The academic courses will be taught by instructors from the Department of African American and African Studies at OSU.
Accommodations
This one-week enrichment program begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends daily at 5:00 p.m. Lunch, snacks, and all educational materials will be provided. Bus passes are available for students who must use the public transportation system.Cost
The cost of the program is $350 per student. A non-refundable deposit of $50 is due by April 20, 2009. The balance of $300 is due by May 11, 2009. Some partial and full scholarships are available. I Know I Can funds are available to students enrolled in the Columbus City schools. Students qualifying for financial assistance will be notified at the time of their acceptance.
Eligibility
Students must be entering grades nine or ten in the fall of 2009. Each student must submit a 75-100 word statement explaining why he/she is interested in the program with the application. Applications should be postmarked no later than April 13, 2009. Students will receive notice of their acceptance by April 17, 2009. Parents/Guardians will be required to provide emergency information and releases upon their child's acceptance to the program. Please note that the space is limited. Therefore, early registration is encouraged.
