"Courage is
the most important
of all the virtues,
because without courage
you can't practice
any other virtue
consistently."

- Maya Angelou

On Saturday, November 7, 2009, at 11:30 am, The Ohio State University's Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center will host its fourth annual Black Veterans Day Salute. For the past three years, the yearly event has honored African-American servicemen and women whose courage has allowed American civilians to enjoy precious rights, freedoms, and securities that are often unappreciated. This year's salute will specifically honor African-American women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Colonel Dolores Helen Hampton, the first president of the National Association of Black Military Women, will be the keynote speaker. Hampton was also the first inspector general of the U.S. Army Reserve. Following the lecture, a panel of African-American servicewomen will share their stories.

The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. To RSVP, please call Kamara Jones, graduate student assistant, at 614-292-3922 or email her at jones.3371@osu.edu

Note: If there is an African-American servicewoman that you believe deserves to be honored at the Black Veterans Day Salute, please call the Community Extension Center at 614-292-3922 and submit her name, branch, rank, and years of service, or fill out and mail the attached form by October 29, 2009.
