This conference will examine African Americans' fight for freedom and equality in Columbus. Among the topics to be discussed:
  • Jim Crow & Segregation in Columbus
  • The Civil Rights Movement in Columbus (NAACP, Urban League, CORE)
  • The War Against Poverty: Columbus Area Community Action Organization (CMACO)
  • The Role of the Media in the Struggle for Freedom and Equality
  • The Politics of School Desegregation
  • The Student Movement at OSU (1962, 1968, 1970)
  • The Black Power Movement
Each panel will conclude with a short-question and answer session

Mark Christian, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Black World Studies, Miami University, will give the morning keynote address "Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association in Columbus."

State Senator Ray Miller will deliver the afternoon keynote "Lessons learned from the Black Freedom Struggle."
