Dr. Lupenga Mphande, Project Co-Principal Investigator
Lupenga Mphande, who has a Ph.D from the University of Texas at Austin, is a specialist of the oral and written traditions of Southern Africa. He is Director of the African Languages Program in the Department of African American and African Studies at The Ohio State University.Dr. Mphande was recipient in 1993 of an American Council of Learned Societies Award and in 1994 of an National Endowment for The Humanities (NEH) grant, which enabled him to investigate the relationship between oral poetics and historical narrative in Southern Africa, on which he is currently preparing a full length study. He was a member of the core faculty at the two summer institutes 1996. Dr Mphande is also an internationally recognized poet.
